Phones outgrew hands about a decade ago. Everything on this page exists to put something between your fingers and a flat, heavy, slippery rectangle.
There are exactly three ways to attach one: magnets, adhesive, and suction. Magnets are removable and depend on what is inside your phone or case. Adhesive is permanent-ish and depends on nothing. Suction depends on the surface, the temperature, and how clean everything is.
The magnetic options here contain real magnets, which is worth stating plainly rather than burying. If you or someone near you has an implanted medical device, follow the guidance published by that device manufacturer and your doctor rather than anything you read on an accessory page.

What to look for
Why it matters
Attachment method
Magnetic, adhesive, or suction
This is the only decision that matters. Everything else is finish and shape.
What is inside your phone
Whether the phone or case has a magnetic ring
A magnetic grip on a phone with no ring and no magnetic case does nothing at all.
Wireless charging
Thickness and whether the grip sits over the charging coil area
Anything between the phone back and a wireless pad is a gap the charger has to work through.
Secondary function
Kickstand, card capacity, rotation, mount compatibility
A grip that also stands the phone up removes a second accessory from the bag.
Removability
Whether the listing states the grip is removable
Adhesive is a decision about the back of the phone. Magnetic is a preference you can change.
Magnetic
Comes off cleanly, holds only as well as the magnet ring in the phone or case allows.

Removable, per the listing
PopSockets Grip for MagSafe, Black
Magnetic
A collapsing grip that the listing states attaches magnetically and comes off again, named for iPhone, Android and Kindle. Removability is the whole argument: an adhesive grip is a decision, a magnetic one is a preference. It only holds as well as the magnet arrangement underneath it, which is a property of the phone or case rather than the grip.
Per port
Manufacturer does not publish the split
The listing states: Removable magnetic attachment for iPhone, Android and Kindle.
A ring grip that also folds out into a stand, with 360 degree rotation and a double-sided magnet stated. Double-sided means it can hold to the phone and also stick to a magnetic mount, which is the trick that makes a grip and a car mount coexist. Rotation is what lets a stand work in both orientations.

The listing states: 360 degree rotation and a double-sided magnet.
The same removable magnetic grip with a metal enamel top instead of a plastic one. The finish is the difference; the mechanism is not. Metal on the top face is worth knowing about if the phone spends time on a wireless charger.
Per port
Manufacturer does not publish the split
The listing states: Removable magnetic attachment and a metal enamel top.
Identical mechanism to the other enamel-topped magnetic grips, in a different color. Listing an accessory three times in three finishes is not padding when the finish is the only reason people choose between them. The magnetic attachment is stated as removable.

Adhesive
Works on any phone regardless of what is inside it. Leaves a mark and is not meant to be moved around.

Holds three to five cards
PopSockets Adhesive Wallet with Grip
Adhesive
A card sleeve with a grip on it, stated to hold three to five cards, with a swappable top and a kickstand position. This is the accessory that replaces a wallet for people who have decided to carry one object. Adhesive rather than magnetic, so it stays where it is put.

The listing states: It holds three to five cards, has a swappable top, and a kickstand.
The plain adhesive grip with a kickstand position, and no magnets anywhere in it. That absence is a feature for anyone avoiding magnets entirely, and it is the reason this one stays in the list. Adhesive holds to a case, not to glass, if you want it removable later.

Suction
Sticks a phone to a smooth surface. The least predictable method here, and the one with the clearest limits.
3 listings in this subgroup.
OCTOBUDDY Double Suction Mount, 2.5 x 3.75 in
Suction
A silicone pad with suction on both faces, stated at 2.5 by 3.75 inches, detachable from the phone. It sticks a phone to a mirror or a tile wall, which is a real use for anyone who films or follows a recipe. Suction is the least predictable attachment method on this site and deserves to be treated that way.
Per port
Manufacturer does not publish the split
The listing states: Double-sided silicone suction, detachable.
A smaller silicone suction pad, stated at 2.25 by 3.25 inches, that adheres to the phone and suctions to a surface. Smaller than the double-sided version, which means less suction area and a lower ceiling on what it will hold. Same rules apply about where not to trust it.
Per port
Manufacturer does not publish the split
The listing states: Silicone suction with an adhesive mount.
A suction cup that attaches to the phone magnetically rather than with adhesive, which the listing describes as working with a MagSafe case. Two attachment methods stacked means two things that can let go. It comes off the phone cleanly, which is the advantage over the adhesive suction pads.

Questions that come up at the counter
Will a magnetic grip work on any phone?
Only if the phone or its case has a magnetic ring for the grip to hold onto. On a phone without one, a magnetic grip has nothing to attach to.
Do phone magnets damage credit cards or hotel keys?
Magnets can affect the magnetic stripe on cards and hotel key cards. Keeping cards in a sleeve behind a magnetic accessory is asking for trouble with the older stripe-based ones.
Can I move an adhesive grip after sticking it on?
Generally not well. Adhesive grips are designed to be placed once, and removing one leaves residue. If you want to reposition, a magnetic grip is the right category.
How much weight will a suction mount hold?
None of these listings publish a weight figure, and suction strength changes with dust, temperature and surface texture. Treat suction as convenient rather than reliable.
Does a grip stop wireless charging from working?
It depends on thickness and placement. Anything sitting between the phone and the pad increases the gap the charger has to bridge, and some grips will prevent it entirely.
