Loadouts built for a situation

Filming without holding anything

You are recording yourself doing something with both hands: cooking, repairing, demonstrating. The phone has to stay put, stay powered, and stay recoverable when it does not stay put.

The build — 5 items

  1. A suction mount sized to the phone

It sticks a phone to a tile wall, a mirror or a cupboard door, which is where a camera needs to be in a kitchen. The listings state their dimensions, so check them against the phone back rather than guessing.

    Grips, Rings & Wallets

OCTOBUDDY Double Suction Mount, 2.5 x 3.75 in

The listing states: Double-sided silicone suction, detachable.

  2. A magnetic grip with a rotating kickstand as the backup mount

Suction fails on textured, dusty or warm surfaces. A rotating stand gives you a second placement option that does not depend on the surface being smooth.

    Grips, Rings & Wallets

SYNCWIRE Magnetic Ring Grip and Kickstand

The listing states: 360 degree rotation and a double-sided magnet.

  3. A power bank with built-in cables

Recording drains a battery quickly and a shoot is exactly when a missing cable stops everything. Built-in cables cannot be left on a table in another room.

    Power Banks

charmast Power Bank with 4 Cables, 10000 mAh

The listing states: Four built-in cables, six outputs, three inputs, and 3A.

  4. Wired earbuds with an inline microphone

No pairing, no latency question, no battery. When the phone is across the room, a cabled microphone is the least dramatic way to get usable sound.

    Headphones & Earbuds

    Apple EarPods with USB-C

The listing states: A built-in remote for music, calls and volume.

  5. A wrist strap for moving between setups

The phone gets picked up and put down twenty times in a session, and that is when it gets dropped.

    Lanyards & Wrist Straps

takyu Lanyard and Wrist Strap Set

The listing states: Two neck straps, two wrist straps and two tether tabs.

Leave out

Things that get packed for this situation and earn nothing.

  • A suction mount above anything you care about

Suction is convenient, not reliable. It weakens with dust, heat and time. Never rely on it over a hard floor, near water, or at any height where a fall matters.

  • A high-wattage wall charger

A phone recording video is thermally busy already. Charging it hard while it films adds heat, and heat is what makes a phone slow its own charging.

  • Active noise canceling earbuds as the microphone

You need to hear the room while you work, and cancellation is the wrong tool for a shoot where something is boiling behind you.

What this covers

A phone mounted where a camera needs to be, powered through a long session, with audio that does not depend on a pairing holding up.

What it does not cover

Any assurance that a mount will hold. Every suction and magnetic mount here can release, so set up over a soft surface, at low height, and away from water. Nothing in this kit is rated to hold weight, because none of these listings publish a weight figure.
